West Tunnel Tours | Heritage Open Days
Free behind the scenes tours of the West Tunnel
Join our curators for a special behind the scenes tour of the West Tunnel – an area not normally open to the public. These free tours are part of the national Heritage Open Days festival.
Duration: 45 minutes
Capacity: 12 people per tour
Recommended for ages 12+
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Tour times: 11am | 12pm | 2pm | 3pm | 4pm
Accessibility: The West Tunnel is not fully accessible. Some sections of the floor at the end of the tunnel have not been restored and the surface is uneven. Wheelchair users will still be able to participate on this tour. They will need to stop at the end before the floor drops down, but will still be able to hear the tour guide and view the area at the end of the tunnel.
Please note - as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, there are some physical aspects of Fort Nelson that cannot be altered, such as the steps of varying widths and heights, and changes of surface from paving stones to gravel and grass. However, we have an installed lift and ramps to provide access to most parts of the site.
Please wear suitable footwear and clothing.
Please consider making a donation. As a charity, your support helps us keep the national collection of artillery free and accessible for everyone to enjoy, no matter their circumstances. Suggested donation £2.50. The amount can be changed or removed if you wish.
